On April 18, 2026, we visited Kyoto's Gion for "Watching the Miyako Odori & Experiencing Maiko Hospitality at an Ochaya on Hanamikoji." It is a Tokiwakai program for learning Japan's traditional culture firsthand, in Gion — said to be Japan's foremost hanamachi (geisha district).

The "Miyako Odori," Coloring Kyoto's Spring

The Miyako Odori is a stage danced by the geiko and maiko of Gion Kobu together, a signature of Kyoto's spring. That day we gathered at the Gion Kobu Kaburenjo, where a tea ceremony was held before the curtain rose. After receiving sweets and matcha prepared by a maiko and geiko, we watched the gorgeous performance.

Maiko Hospitality at an Ochaya on Hanamikoji

After the performance, we moved to an ochaya on Hanamikoji. In Gion, Japan's foremost hanamachi, we invited maiko, geiko, and jikata (musicians) and experienced ochaya hospitality. To place ourselves within Gion's zashiki culture — long guarded by strict codes — was a precious opportunity.

As a parting gift, we prepared the mame-mochi of "Futaba" in Demachiyanagi, Kyoto, where the queue never ends — a heartfelt touch from an organizer who loves Kyoto.

Touching the Real Thing, and Learning

Tokiwakai values experiences that go beyond mere "sightseeing," placing ourselves within the setting to learn. This day, too — touching the hospitality of the hanamachi and the beauty of its arts — became a time of learning no book could give.

Tokiwakai is a community based in Ise dedicated to passing on Japanese traditional culture and nurturing younger generations. Beyond Ise's own observances, we hope to share opportunities to encounter the culture of Kyoto and other regions as well.
