Tokiwakai is a community based in Ise that works to pass on Japanese traditional culture and to nurture the healthy growth of younger generations. The word "Tokiwa" means that which never changes — evergreen and ever-flourishing. True to that name, we hope to hand the unchanging spirit of Japan on to the next generation, however much the times may change.

Our journey so far

At the heart of our activities is the Tsuitachi-kai, a gathering to enjoy Tsuitachi-mochi — a famous Ise confection available only on the first day of each month. Since ancient times, the people of Ise have visited the Grand Shrine in the early morning of the first of every month, a custom called Tsuitachi-mairi, and enjoyed the seasonal Tsuitachi-mochi on the way. Through gatherings around this confection, Tokiwakai has shared the culture of Ise's prayer and daily life with friends across generations.

Our other pillar is taking part in the festivals of Ise. We have joined ceremonies handed down in Ise — such as the Okihiki, in which sacred timber for the Shikinen Sengu rebuilding is hauled to the shrine, and the Summer Solstice Festival at Futami — serving and participating in person. Not watching as tourists, but joining the festival as one of its bearers: that experience is the core of what Tokiwakai does.

What we aim for next

What we value most is not only learning with the mind, but experiencing with all five senses and talking together across generations. We will continue to grow a place where students and seasoned elders alike can gather without barriers.
